They Knit: Call for Hand-knit Stockings

Attention: Knitters of Newfoundland and Labrador

You are invited to submit a hand-knit stocking to our community exhibition “They Knit.”

The Anna Templeton Centre will be celebrating the wonderful knitting and knitters in the province by hosting a community knitting exhibit at the Quidi Vidi Village Artisan Studios in November 2023. Union House Arts will be a drop-off site for stockings that are going to be in the show!

We are looking for your take on holiday stockings – either using traditional patterns or original designs – to display as part of the exhibit. Using the stocking form as your canvas, we encourage participants to create a design or interpretation that showcases your family’s celebrations of the Winter Holiday Season. We are hoping to display a variety of stockings showcasing the different styles and traditions of knitters from across the province.

This exhibit is being created in memory of Dorothy Marie Verge Clarke – an avid knitter, whose family recalled that she loved to knit Christmas stockings. Following the exhibit, the items submitted will be photographed and will be used to create a knitting memorial in honour of Dorothy Marie Verge Clarke, and of all women knitters in the province.

Proceeds from the exhibit through the optional sale of the stocking will go towards passing knitting skills onto the next generation by providing free knitting instruction for youth.

All completed pieces must be received by November 2nd. Please drop off your piece to UHA with the submission form below by October 31st so we can get your piece to St. John’s in time!
