We’re Hiring: Land Based Arts and Community Programs Coordinator

$20.00/h (minimum, pending funding)

This role is focused on both garden development and community programs support. Candidates with interests in visual art, craft, living heritage, food security, ecology, community engagement, and/or environmental actions are encouraged to apply! This role is skill-flexible and has room for development based on the coordinators strongest skills!

Note: This position is funded through both provincial and federal employment programs. To be eligible for this position the candidate must:

  • be a Canadian citizen or a permanent resident, or have refugee status in Canada;
    Note: Non-Canadian graduates holding temporary work visas or awaiting permanent resident status are not eligible.
  • be legally entitled to work in Canada (have a valid social insurance number);
  • be between 16 and 30 years of age
  • be a graduate from college, CEGEP or university (within one year)

With the supervision of the Board of Directors, and the Programming Director, the Land Based Arts and Community Programs Coordinator will:

  • Running community programming that may include community barbeques, bonfires, backyard movie nights, or other events that the candidate wishes to implement at UHA during their employment
  • Aiding in and planning fundraising for the Community Garden and outdoor studio
  • Garden maintenance such as weeding and mowing the grass, tending to fruit trees and vegetable beds, and preparing the ground for planting
  • Support and implement programming such as workshops, exhibition receptions, and artist talks
  • Support coordination and implement general UHA fundraising initiatives
  • Assist visiting artists. Examples of assistance include answering questions about the space, local services, inquiries about the building, garden, community events, etc.
  • Researching and compiling funding opportunities
  • Assist with outdoor studio support for artist residency program
  • Keeping track of sales of merchandise, donations, and memberships
  • Support social media updates on Instagram and Facebook together with the Gallery and Communications Coordinator
  • Developing a new-media rental program and policy for community use and artists in residence
  • Greeting gallery and programming visitors during open hours. Keeping track of numbers of visitors to the space.
  • Develop and run summer youth programming
  • Develop and run the Community Compost Program
  • Together with the Gallery and Communications Coordinator, create and implement an outreach plan to get locals and community members involved in the Community our Garden

Throughout the placement the Land Based Arts and Community Programs Coordinator will work with the Programming Director and the Gallery and Communications Coordinator to organize a public event in August that will highlight the garden developments and may include studio demos, preserving workshops, food tasting, or other public events or workshops relating to our outdoor space. The candidate may be responsible for various other UHA tasks in collaboration with other staff such as: documenting events and exhibitions with photos/videos, preparing artist residency apartments and studios in-between visitors; set-up and clean-up during workshops, exhibitions, and other programming; and locking up the building at the end of open hours or after an event. Other tasks and projects may be assigned as required upon consultation with the employee. Weekly start and end times will adjust as necessary depending on community programming, workshops, exhibitions, and other events. This position is intended for an individual who has some experience working with arts and/or community organizations and is enthusiastic about developing networks and working with artists with diverse practices. 

This position will ideally support a candidate that is interested in, or focusing on, one or more of the following. Ideal candidates are not required to have experience or interest in all of the following, though the position will best support and suit those who do consider:

Note: the Selected Candidate must be willing to relocate to the Bonavista Peninsula for the duration of the placement. While not guaranteed, UHA will aid in securing housing for the candidate.
