Union House Arts Annual General Meeting

June 18, 2022

Some 2021-2022 highlights include:

We have a new Director! The first ever Director of Union House House Arts, Jane
Walker, decided to step down in May 2022 in order to pursue other endeavours. In late
April we hired Bethany MacKenzie as our new Director.
Bethany is a graduate (BFA) of
the Visual Arts program at the Grenfell Campus of Memorial University. She also served
as Gallery Attendant at UHA for eight weeks in the summer of 2021, so is familiar with
Port Union and the Bonavista peninsula. We look forward to this new chapter for UHA
with Bethany as the Director.

UHA garden. Since the last AGM the space behind the building has been developed
into a garden/studio work space.
We were able to hire Brandon Goodland as a garden
assistant last summer who did a great job with the space. It was used for the first time to
host a meet and greet for the 2021 Bonavista Biennale in August last year. We received
$25,000 from provincial Come Home Year 2022 Cultural Funding to further develop the
Outdoor maker space this summer.

The Preservers Dinner Fundraiser was able to be held again. This fantastic dinner,
held at UHA on 2 April 2022, was prepared by a team from Toslow restaurant in St.
John’s.
Courses were served on pottery made for the event by ceramic artists Maaike
Charron, Jason Holley, Alexis Templeton, Erin Callahan St. John and Michael Flaherty.
This event was a success and we hope to continue to make it an annual fundraiser,
assuming it is safe to gather around the dinner table.

First Canada Council Grant received.
We received a programming grant for $22,300
from the Canada Council for the Arts, which has been used to create and support the
exhibition season from May-September 2022 with the theme of “Land”. This is a big
step for us as it will hopefully lead to further success with CCA.

Programming overview. We were able to have a few exhibitions in 2021, one of which
was in partnership with the 2021 Bonavista Biennale (To Build a Fire: Jonathan S.
Greene). There were several workshops hosted in the past year as well. On 21 May
2022 we hosted an opening reception for Alex Antle’s exhibit ‘Njiknam (My Younger
Brother)’, which will be in the gallery through 23 July 2022. This is the first
exhibition in the theme of Land and also with Bethany as the Director.

Artist-in-Residence program. The AiR program focused on artists from Newfoundland
in 2021 due to travel restrictions and safety concerns. However, we are moving forward
this year with artists who are from within and outside of the province. We received many
applications from our latest call.
