Call for Board Members: Expressions of Interest

The board and staff at Union House Arts (UHA) are welcoming folks from the community to join the volunteer board of directors! The board is generous and active, supporting staff and the activities in-house at UHA including the planning and implementation of events, fundraisers, back-of-house strategic planning and implementation, and more. If you’re interested in contributing to the fabric and workings of UHA, in any capacity you can at this time, there are open spots on the board!

We’re also looking for an individual with financial knowledge to serve as the Treasurer. This role is supported by staff, up-to-date meticulous record keeping, accounting software, and a full Finance Committee.

Experience on a board is an asset, but not necessary to contribute. When you join the board you’ll be supported by the rest of the members and staff to learn our governance structure, the flow of events, strategic plan, calendar, decision making precesses, and organization of in-house committees and their responsibilities.

UHA is dedicated to decolonization and anti-colonial futures; developing spaces of security and welcoming; supporting the research, development, and realization of contemporary art practices and works in the contexts of intersectional local realities; as well as the cultivation of contemporary art discourse and dialogue that is contributing to these priorities. UHA imagines a future that is generous, generative, kind, supportive, informed and accessible for people of all backgrounds, educations, and experiences.

UHA is welcoming expressions of interest from everyone and anyone interested in kindly contributing! We prioritize diversification of the board, staff, and volunteer community behind our organization and celebrate interest from everyone, including Seniors and Youth, transgender, non-binary, 2SLGBTQIA+ folks, Black, Indigenous, racialized people, newcomers and Immigrants, Disabled people, and those with diverse lived experiences to contribute to the development of informed perspective and inclusion. Board members do not have to reside in the province of Newfoundland & Labrador and do not have to be Canadian citizens.

Expectations of the board members are to:

  • participate in monthly virtual board meetings and one Annual General Meeting. Monthly board meetings run from 1 – 3 hours.
  • support UHA as a Board Member for a minimum 2 year term
  • support board and staff with care and perspective, guidance, and sharing of your skills
  • additional responsibilities may be to review reports, set in motion action items from board and committee meetings including updates of activities
  • read, understand, and affirm through your signature the Code of Conduct and Integrity created by the UHA Anti-Oppression Committee

As a new board member, there is no expectation to join additional committees, though if you wish to you will be welcomed to do so!

To join the UHA Board of Directors, please send us a written expression of interest by May 30th, 2025 to unionhousearts@gmail.com. Expressions of Interest can be written as a formal letter with an attached pdf of your CV or written in the body of an email with an attached pdf of your CV. If you don’t have a CV, that’s ok, send us a resume or a description of your relevant experience.

If you have previous board experience, are interested in joining additional committees, have other volunteer experience, hold particular skills you wish to bring to the community, or want to portray any other information, please include it all! You may self-identify any parts of your lived experience or identity you wish to inform the current board about, though it’s not necessary to be considered for a seat on the board.
