Bonavista Biennale’s second artist in residence, joining us in November, is Haruna Sugisaki!

On Thursday, Nov 14, 7pm, Haruna will introduce her practice in conversation with Rose Bouthillier at Union House Arts.

Haruna Sugisaki is an artist based in Ōiso, Japan. She graduated from Tokyo Zokei University in 2017 with a degree in painting. After graduation, she shifted her field to the sea and mountains, focusing on the contact point where human activities and nature’s life force intersect. Through experiences rooted in local climates, such as mountain climbing and cooking, she seeks to perceive and express the power of nature and the cycle of life.Sugisaki’s works include “Playing with Soil,” in which she paints murals with citizens and students using pigments derived from nature, such as soil, plants, and soot collected in the places she visits.

Through a collaboration with Discovery UNESCO Global Geopark, Bonavista Biennale artists in residence are introduced to the Peninsula’s unique geological features.

Bonavista Biennale artist residencies were made possible by funding from Newfoundland and Labrador’s Year of the Arts.
