We are pleased to present a series of workshops in association with our 2021 Artist-in-Residence Program, with support from the ArtsNL Community Arts Program. Workshops will be added on a rolling basis when details are confirmed and registration is open.

Embroidery using Natural Materials with Susan Furneaux

Saturday July 3 2021, 1:00 – 4:00 PM

Spend the afternoon with Susan Furneaux learning the art of embroidery using locally sourced natural materials. Using basic stitches participants will create a small piece to take home. The ability to thread a needle is all the experience required.

Participants do not need to bring anything, all materials supplied. No previous skill or knowledge required, 8 years and up (under 14 must be accompanied by an adult).

This workshop is free and supported by Craft @ The Edge, a project of the Craft Council of Newfoundland and Labrador.

Off-Loom Weaving using Natural Materials with Stephanie Stoker

Sunday July 4 2021, 10:00AM – 1:00 PM

During this workshop we will work with natural and found materials to create a lovely handmade tapestry. Participants will learn such weaving techniques as plain weave, fringe, soumak, etc. Make a beautiful piece you will be proud to hang on your wall to brighten a room.

All materials will be provided (participants can bring fibres, twigs, etc. from home if they have specific things they wish to use). No previous skill necessary, 8 years and up (under 14 must be accompanied by an adult).

Natural Dyes and Eco-Printing

with Jen Cake

Join Jen Cake for a beginner’s Intro to Natural Dyes and Eco-Printing, learn about fibre types, local plants and dye sources and leave with your own naturally dyed silk scarf!

In this workshop, artists-in-residence Jen Cake and Steve Evans will lead participants of their separate workshops to a nearby site for a physically-distanced boil up and introduction to their nature informed practices. From there, Jen’s workshop participants will learn how to forage materials for natural dye processes. Back at UHA, Jen will instruct the group how to use their materials to dye their very own silk scarf. All materials will be provided, or foraged during the workshop.

En Plein Air – Outdoor Landscape Painting

with Steve Evans

Saturday July 10 2021, 10:30 – 3:30 PM

Join Steve Evans for a day of outdoor landscape painting, also known as painting “en plein air”.

In this workshop, artists-in-residence Jen Cake and Steve Evans will lead participants of their separate workshops to a nearby site for a physically-distanced boil up and introduction to their nature informed practices. From there, Steve will lead his group to a nearby area to set up for an afternoon of guided painting and sketching from the surrounding landscape.

Watercolour paints, paper, and various sketching materials will be provided – but participants are welcome to bring along their own paint (oil, acrylic) and materials if they wish.
