Elijah Garrard is an artist and storyteller from Seattle, currently based in St. John’s, NL. Garrard grew up performing at regional and international storytelling and folklife festivals. Garrard currently holds a BA in Latin American Studies and Film from Bowdoin College. As a 2013 Fulbright grantee to Argentina, they taught English to adults and comics-making for teens. Garrard later taught in Turkey, Mexico, and Mongolia and in 2017, attended North Seattle College as a nontraditional student, graduating with an AFA and League for Innovation award in printmaking. Pre-Covid, they tabled frequently at zinefests, and placed first in the 2020 Washington State Zine Contest. Their zines have been acquired by archives in the US, Australia, and Europe. Garrard has taught zinemaking through libraries, schools, and community organizations. These days they can be found running zine exchanges, working at St. Michael’s Printshop, where they serve on the board, or scavenging for recyclable art supplies.
